Clinical Lab Science Program Overview

CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS MAKE THE PRACTICE OF MODERN MEDICINE POSSIBLE.

Clinical Laboratory Scientists, also called Medical Technologists, make the practice of modern medicine possible. Using state-of-the-art equipment and computer technology, they perform a wide array of complex laboratory procedures which are essential to patients' medical care. New and emerging technologies are constantly expanding the role of the medical technologist. New York State law now mandates that Clinical Laboratory Scientists must be licensed by the State to work in the laboratory setting.

Trained Clinical Laboratory Scientists have a wide array of career opportunities open to them. They may work in one of the major areas of the clinical medical laboratory including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, etc. or, they may use their training to pursue a career in higher education, research science, health care administration, medicine, information technology, marketing, nursing, or law.

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital's Clinical Laboratory Science Program, which has been in existence for over four decades, offers comprehensive training in both theory and practice. Formal academic instruction provides both a theoretical basis in various subject areas and an understanding of the medical problems which may underlie a physician's request for laboratory services. The program involves a full-time, one-year commitment where students concurrently engage in both didactic and clinical educational experiences. Students study all fields related to the laboratory sciences, including clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, blood bank, urinalysis and body fluids, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, coagulation, safety, education topics, management, quality control, and patient ethics.

Lynn Jones, MS Ed, MT(ASCP), serves as the Program Director of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital's Clinical Laboratory Science Program and has a faculty appointment from NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
